Quick
reference glosary:
Screen printing
A method of forcing ink through
a screen stencil and onto a printable surface. Screen printing
can be used to reproduce a few colours, or continuous-tones.
Because it lays down the ink up to 30 times thicker
than lithography, the colour is more dense and durable than
other printing processes and is ideal for transferring designs
onto almost any printable surface including posters, clothing,
bottles, mugs and compact discs etc.
Resolution
The sharpness of text and graphics provided by any
printer or output device, measured in dots per inch (DPI).
Dots Per Inch (DPI)
A measure of the resolution
of a file. The higher the number, the sharper the type and images.
Bitmap files
Bitmap
files are formed by a rectangular grid of small squares
known as pixels. Unlike vector graphics which are edited
by altering lines and shapes, bitmap images are edited
by manipulating groups of pixels. Bitmap images are resolution-dependent;
they can appear jagged and lose detail if they are created
at a low resolution and then enlarged or printed at a
higher resolution.
Vector files
Vector
files are made up of mathematically defined curves and line segments called vectors.
They are resolution-independent; they can be output at
any resolution without any loss of quality.
JPEG (.jpg)
Joint Photographics Expert Group format used for
resolution-dependent bitmap files. JPEG uses a 'lossy'
compression scheme that reduces the file size by
identifying and discarding data not essential to
the display of the image. A higher level of compression
results in lower image quality, but in most cases compressing
an image useing the Maximum quality option produces a result
that is indistinguishable from the original.
TIFF (.tif)
Tagged Image File Format. Resolution dependent bitmap file format. The TIFF format
supports LZW compression, a lossless compression that does not discard deatil
from the image, but helps to reduce the overall file size.
EPS (.eps)
Encapsulated PostScript file format which can contain vector graphics or bitmap
images. These files contain a screen preview, instructions for a Postscript output
device, and in some cases bitmap image data. Adobe Illustrator can save artwork
in EPS format.
PDF (.pdf)
Portable Document Format. A universal file format that can be viewed and printed
consistently across any computer platform using Adobe's free Acrobat Reader.
PDF can represent both vector and bitmap graphics.
AI (.ai)
Native file format
of Adobe Illustrator, industry-leading software for creating vector graphics. |
